About this site
Lift the Lid is an independent, plain-language guide to making a Subject Access Request to the Committee for Home Affairs. It collects no personal data and has no inbox.
Last reviewed 2026-05-03.
Who runs it
Lift the Lid is run by residents of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. It is not affiliated with the States of Guernsey, the Committee for Home Affairs, the Office of the Data Protection Authority, or any political party.
What this site does
It is a static website. The form, the clause pool, and the assembly logic all run in your browser. There is no server-side application, no database, no inbox, and no analytics.
What happens, in order
- Your browser fetches the page from a content delivery network. Cloudflare sees your IP, the way it does for any site it serves. We do not access or retain those logs.
- The form, clause pool, and assembly logic load into your browser. From this point on, everything runs locally.
- You type your name into the form. It lives in browser memory only.
- You press Build the letter. The site picks one phrasing per role, substitutes your name, and shows you the result. Nothing is transmitted.
- You pick a submission route. The site either constructs a URL that opens your mail provider with the draft prefilled, copies the text to your clipboard, or invokes your browser's print dialog. None of these route through this site.
- Your email provider then sees the contents of the request as it sends, the same way they see any email. Choose accordingly.
What this site does not do
- No cookies. No
localStorageorsessionStorage. If you reload, your draft is gone. - No analytics — no Google Analytics, Plausible, GoatCounter, or anonymous beacons.
- No third-party scripts. The page loads only its own stylesheet, its own script, and its own clause data.
- No inbox, no contact form, no feedback address.
Why no contact channel
Providing a contact channel would mean accepting your inbound personal data — making us a data controller, with the obligations that brings. We have chosen instead to process zero personal data of any kind.
For questions about your statutory rights, or about a request you've sent, contact the Office of the Data Protection Authority directly.
Verify it yourself
Don't take our word for it. Open developer tools in your browser (right-click anywhere and choose Inspect, or press F12), switch to the Network tab, and reload the page. You'll see the page, stylesheet, and script load — and after that, no further requests leave your browser to this site.
Lawful basis and retention
Because we process no personal data, no lawful basis under the Data Protection (Bailiwick of Guernsey) Law, 2017 is engaged on our side. Our retention period is therefore zero.
